Harvard House was built by Thomas Rogers, following the disastrous fires in 1594 and 1595 which destroyed much of the town centre.
It is known who built it and when because the initials TR end AR (for Thomas Rogers and his wife Alic) are carved into the elaborate frontage together with the date, 1596.
The earliest views of the building show the same embellishments as seen today.
